In the Ancient Greek Life, gods and goddesses were very important. Although there were hundreds of Greek gods, there were 12 of them who were considered Olympians who lived on Mount Olympus. Together they presided over every aspect of human life. The reins of the gods stretched from god of the sky, god of war, goddess of love, god of the sea, god of the underworld and many more. Greeks depended on the gods for almost everything including, but not limited to, travel, weather and storms, love and relationships, and war. Also, most Greek city-states has a patron god who watched over their city and protected it. In Athens, the patron God was Athena, goddess of wisdom, in Sparta the parton gods were Ares, god of war, and Artemis, goddess of the hunt.
How Zeus defeated the Titans and got his domain:
Many years ago, a titan, named Cronus along with his wife, Rhea, gave birth six children. Fearing that the prophecy that one of his children would overthrow him, after each one was born, he would swallow them. This only happened for the first five, Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, and Poseidon. As this happened with each one of her children, Rhea got tired of her husband swallowing them so she tricked him into swallowing a rock, instead of her final son, Zeus. When Zeus came of age, he freed all the prisoners and his siblings, from his father's stomach, Zeus and his brothers Poseidon and Hades turned the prisoners against him and started a war. The war went on for ten years and when Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades released the Cyclopes from captivity. In gratitude, the Cyclopes gave each of the brothers a weapon. Poseidon received a trident, Zeus a thunderbolt, and Hades a helmet of darkness. They used these gifts to finally defeat Cronus and the rest of the titans. Now that the three brothers were the rulers of all existence they decided to draw lots to determine their domains. Poseidon drew water, Zeus drew the sky, and Hades drew the underworld.
