The Peloponnesian War.... Athens vs. Sparta
The Peloponnesian War was fought by Athens and Sparta after the wake of the Persian retreat following the Persian War.. Both independent Greek city-states were eager and hungry for power. Sparta was especially suspicious of Athens authority and power. Athens had a strong naval force while Sparta relied on an army. The war was fought for 27 years and was named after the peninsula, Peloponnesus, thus the name, the Peloponnesian War. This war was fought in Asia Minor, Greece, and Sicily. plSparta is located on this peninsula. The result of this war ended in the weakening of the Greek city-states and the fall of Athens as well as its maritime empire. The events of this war were recorded by historian Thucydides. Because of Athens defeat, they became vulnerable to other empire and power attacks. The war was divided into these main phases: The Archidamian War, The Peace of Nicias, The Sicilian War, and The Ionian or Decelean War.
